JICA Executive Senior Vice President Yamada Held Talks with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Hasina

On July 6, JICA Executive Senior Vice President Yamada Junichi met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh during his visit to the country.

In the meeting, which was also attended by Iwama Kiminori, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Bangladesh, Dr. Yamada reported that a memorial ceremony was held on July 3 in the presence of members of the bereaved families of the seven Japanese citizens who lost their lives in the July 1, 2016 terrorist attack in Dhaka (who had been engaged in the preparatory study on the Dhaka mass rapid transit development project). Prime Minister Hasina declared that the contributions of those who lost their lives will never be forgotten.

Dr. Yamada then mentioned to Prime Minister Hasina that during his stay, he had visited three Dhaka Metro Rail lines, the Matabari deep sea port, the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone, and other sites of JICA-supported projects, and confirmed that steady progress of said projects was underway. He also pledged JICA’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Bangladesh. Prime Minister Hasina then expressed her sincere appreciation for the fact that a succession of large-scale projects supported by JICA are nearing completion.
