On April 6, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, JICA joined the Sport en Commun platform launched by the French Development Agency (AFD).

Sport en Commun is a digital platform launched in November 2020, and aims to network stakeholders working for the fulfilment of SDGs in Africa through sports. It works mainly to introduce and match resources that can be brought together, such as the activities of affiliated groups and human resources or finance.

Sports are seen as an important key to sustainable development. As well as promoting health and skills development, diverse people are brought together through sport. This contributes to the achievement of peaceful societies and the promotion of social participation by women and people with disabilities. JICA has been carrying out international cooperation activities in the field of sports since the 1960s by dispatching Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.

JICA and AFD held the ”Sport for Development in Africa,” which was a side event at the 2019 Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7), as a chance to start cooperation in the sports field. In the future, JICA will act together with Sport en Commun to collect and disseminate information on development work occurring through sports in Africa. At the same time, it will work to strengthen partnership with affiliated groups and contribute to the realization of African SDGs.
