On August 15, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar for the Project for the Capacity Development of Tax Administration Utilizing Big Data, a technical cooperation project.

Mongolia has a fragile fiscal base due to its economy being largely dependent on external factors such as international market prices for resources. In order to strengthen this base, the securing of stable fiscal revenue and the strengthening of the capacity of its tax administration have thus become urgent issues within the country.

Through this project, a big-data based risk analysis model will be developed to identify issues such as taxpayers at high risk of underreporting, thus introducing an efficient tax administration process. Moreover, by developing Mongolia’s capacity to utilize big data and improving its administrative process, the project will contribute to an enhancement of the efficiency and effectiveness of tax administration in the country. In doing so, the project will also contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 8 (Decent work and economic growth), 10 (Reduced inequalities), and 17 (Partnerships for the goals).
