On December 26, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in Vientiane to provide grant aid of up to 4,171 million yen for the Project for the Reconstruction of the Chao Anouvong Stadium.

Chao Anouvong Stadium was built in 1950 in the center of the capital city of Vientiane. Since then, the stadium has been used to host various events for the general public and athletes, such as practices and competitions for national sports (soccer, rugby, and others) and para-athletics. However, the serious aging of the stadium’s facilities and lack of equipment have hindered both the safe use of the stadium by athletes and the general public—including those with disabilities—as well as its smooth operation.Chao Anouvong Stadium was built in 1950 in the center of the capital city of Vientiane. In response to this situation, this project will reconstruct the aging Chao Anouvong Stadium and ancillary facilities and install new equipment. In addition, on-site training will be provided on the operation and maintenance of the facilities and equipment, and manuals in the local languages will be prepared to help ensure that appropriate maintenance and management activities can be continued autonomously.

This project will contribute to both the promotion of the social participation of people with disabilities in Laos and sports and cultural activities, and the development of the urban environment in Vientiane. It will do so by strengthening the stadium’s functions, offering a barrier-free design and improving the safety of the facilities, among other developments. This project will thereby also contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goal 4 (Quality education).
