On April 2, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) for the Project for Strengthening Regional Power System of Southern African Power Pool,＊ a technical cooperation project.

The Southern Africa region has a high potential for the use of renewable energy sources such as hydro, solar, and wind power. However, renewable energy resources are unevenly distributed and the region is unable to fully utilize renewable energy as a whole. Furthermore, with the future growth of electricity demand in the Southern Africa region, peak demand is projected to reach 85,000 MW by 2040. In order to provide clean and affordable electricity and improve access to electricity in the long term, it is essential to promote the development of renewable energy sources and the integration of electricity sharing within the region.
Through SAPP, whose secretariat is located in Zimbabwe, this project will provide capacity building for wide-area system operation and electricity market operation for the power utilities of 12 SAPP member countries, and will contribute to the promotion of stable access to clean and affordable electricity in the Southern Africa region.
This project will therefore also contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 7 (Affordable and clean energy), 13 (Climate action), and 17 (Partnerships for the goals).
*Southern African Power Pool (SAPP): An organization consisting of representatives of power companies in the Southern Africa region, established to provide a reliable and economically efficient supply of electricity for its member countries. The 12 member countries are: the Republic of Botswana, the Republic of Mozambique, the Republic of Malawi, the Republic of South Africa, the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Republic of Namibia, the Republic of Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania, the Republic of Zambia, and the Republic of Zimbabwe.
