On April 15, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Guinea in Conakry to provide grant aid of up to 2,720 million yen for the Project for the Reconstruction of Faranah Bridge on National Route No.2.
The Faranah Bridge on National Route No.2, which will be replaced under this project, is a major transportation link between the capital Conakry and the Forested Guinea region, and is used by many vehicles and pedestrians traveling between the two regions. However, the bridge is in danger of falling due to its age, with its single-lane traffic causing congestion and logistical bottlenecks. Furthermore, because of Guinea’s high economic growth rate, with an average of more than 6% per year since 2016, the increase in traffic volume is expected to continue. Thus, the elimination of traffic congestion by improving transportation infrastructure has become an urgent issue.
Signing Ceremony
This project will replace the Faranah Bridge with a two-lane bridge that can withstand two-way traffic and heavy vehicles, thereby ensuring traffic safety. Moreover, the improvement of transportation services through the project will serve to strengthen inter-regional connectivity and stabilize domestic logistics, including that related to agricultural products and daily commodities. In addition, by contributing to the functional enhancement of National Route No.2, an international corridor, the project will also facilitate logistics between Guinea and neighboring countries.
The project aligns with Guinea's development policies as well as with Japan's cooperation policy, and will also contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 3 (Good health and well-being), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), and 11 (Sustainable cities and communities).
