The JICA Research Institute is pleased to invite Dr. David Malone, Rector of the United Nations University (Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations), to a public seminar on “International Development: Ideas, Experience, and Prospects”.
After many decades of the developing world lagging the industrialized countries, since the global economic crisis initiated in 2007-2008, developing regions, particularly Africa to date, have proved more resilient than have countries of the Global North, confounding expectations. A degree of confusion has ensued within international organizations, among countries, and between experts on what shape (if any defined shape) the post-2015-development framework should adopt, while the traditional donors tighten their belts and turn inwards.
In his lecture, he will re-examine the theories and methodologies adopted by the “development community” since the 1950s in the light of current context, when the ideas behind development are changing after the global economic crisis.
