Day:2010.07.28

Contents

More than 200 million Muslims inhabit Southeast Asia and have an enormous impact on culture, institutions and politics in the region, though the role of Islam varies by country and by region.

On the other hand, Southeast Asia has experienced several conflicts in which a cause is attributed to religious differences, such as in Mindanao in the Philippines and in Patani in southern Thailand. Furthermore, acts of terrorism have been committed in the region by radicals compelled to assert global religious revolution.

Through public lectures and a panel discussion by eminent scholars and peace experts, this symposium aims to explore the background of such insurgencies in Southeast Asia, and focuses on the roles and characteristics of Islam in the region in light of recent globalization. Discussions will also touch upon the roles of the international community in addressing these issues.
