Preventing Violent Conflict in Africa:
Inequalities, Perceptions and Institutions

JICA Research Institute (JICA-RI) Seminar Launching the Book edited by
Yoichi Mine, Frances Stewart, Sakiko Fukuda-Parr, and Thandika Mkandawire
with a foreword by Sadako Ogata

JICA-RI will host a series of seminars on conflict prevention in Africa on the occasion of the publication of the book based on its research findings, Preventing Violent Conflict in Africa: Inequalities, Perceptions and Institutions, from Palgrave Macmillan. The seminars will be organized in the three locations: Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Brussels (Belgium), and London (UK). (The event in London will be streamed online on the ODI website.)
The book analyzes the interactions of horizontal inequalities (HIs), people’s perceptions and institutions, as well as their impacts on political stability and conflict risks, and brings forward policy recommendations for development practitioners and policy-makers. Combining quantitative analysis and qualitative anatomy of society, it digs into historical experiences of conflict and conflict resolution in Rwanda, Burundi, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria.
The seminars will invite editors of the book and authors of the chapters, including researchers of the JICA-RI, to highlight the key findings and their practical implications for policy-makers, practitioners and academic researchers. They will give a critical insight into how development aid can contribute to preventing violent conflict in Africa, as well as what the practitioners should not do to that end.
