Through the JICA's project, Cambodia's first 4-year colleges in Phnom Penh and Battambang have been accredited as higher education institutions, marking a big step forward in the field of education in Cambodia.

The modern teacher training system in Cambodia started with irregular short-term training programs to cope with the overwhelming shortage of teachers during the conflict reconstruction period after the 1980s, and after the training system was gradually developed, 2-year teacher training centers for primary and secondary were established as regular teacher training institutions in 1997.

In response to the request from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of Cambodia, this project has been supporting the first two 4-year Teacher Education Colleges in Cambodia, which were constructed with Japanese Grant Aid since 2017, to further ensure the quality of teachers. JICA had been cooperating for the past six years, providing support for syllabus revision by Japanese experts, workshops for teachers, and training in Japan and others. This has led to the establishment of a foundation for curriculum and institutional development, which has improved education at the two colleges, and the importance of teachers who have graduated from 4-year colleges has been widely recognized in Cambodia.

The first graduates had graduated in September 2022 and will finally put the knowledge and experience they have learned at the colleges into practice at schools. We do hope and believe that the next generation of children taught by the new generation of teachers at the four-year colleges will contribute to Cambodia's industrial development in coming future.
