JICA Partnership Program Empowers Young Indonesian Farmers for Agri-business Success

2024.02.19

Under the JICA Partnership Program, Noen Taya(農園たや) in collaboration with the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Extension and Human Resource Development (IAAERHD), Ministry of Agriculture, is taking a step towards promoting agricultural economic development in Indonesia through technical intern trainees (TITs) for young farmers. Each year, young farmers are dispatched to Japan for an intensive month-long training program.

Noen Taya is a farm located in Fukui prefecture, Japan, but it is not typical farm that we imagine. With the motto “Think globally, act locally”, Noen Taya practices activities that built people and communities through farming, and now expanding its activities to Indonesia.

Previously, the Indonesian Centre for Agricultural Training (ICAT) conducted training, which mainly focused on Japanese language, basic agricultural techniques, but there was a lack of post-program support and entrepreneurial direction. To improve the training for the young trainees, the current program goes deeper, helping farmers in creating their own business when they return home. The trainees come from various provinces in Indonesia including West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Sulawesi learn from experts in Japan and receive support to start their own agri-businesses.

The trainees dive into advanced practices and business management, becoming true Agri leaders. Before they even leave, trainees receive pre-departures training on making business plans and setting goals, ensuring they are prepared to hit the ground running upon their return. The program does not end in Japan but provides ongoing guidance and resources to help trainees turn their dreams into reality.

By equipping the trainees with the knowledge, vision, and resources they need, this program aims to boost farmer income and support their families, creating thriving businesses that promote local economies and sustainable agricultural practices for a brighter future for Indonesian farming communities.
