On 26th March, Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM) and East New Britain Provincial (ENBP) Administration Office held a national seminar to disseminate the “Northeast Gazelle Peninsula Infrastructure Development (NEGID) Plan” from Provincial Administration to National Departments/Agencies. The plan was handed over to Minister for National Planning, Hon. Ano Pala, by Member for Kokopo District Hon. Mr. Ereman ToBainin Junior on behalf of Governor Hon. Michael Marum. The occasion was witnessed by Rabaul MP Dr. Allan Marat and Japan’s Ambassador H.E. Watanabe Nobuyuki.
The plan was developed under the support of JICA’s Technical Cooperation “The Project for Kokopo-Rabaul Infrastructure Development Plan”, with a strong leadership of Mr. Levi Mano, ENBP Administrator, to promote development of infrastructure in harmony with economic sectors and environment and to contribute to budged planning necessary for infrastructure development in the Northeast Gazelle Peninsula. With the Future Development Vision “For the Nation’s most liveable, resilient and enterprising region with sustainable infrastructure for economic growth”, the plan covers socioeconomic framework, future regional spatial structure, general land use policy plan in urban areas, policies, strategies, and priority projects for target infrastructure sectors, and result of strategic environmental assessment.
It is expected for Government of PNG to implement the plan, together with JICA and other Development Partners, to make Northeast Gazelle Peninsula a more productive and resilient region, leading to a larger size of economy and increased demands for various infrastructures in the region.
