Visit to the University of Gondar

Four short-term FRG based seed treatment researches are in progress, aiming to identify the efficacy(ies) of seed treatment on the crop stand establishment (including survival rate of the sown seed), which has a decisive influence on the final yield and/or quality. Dr. Niide, a JICA expert for FRG II, has visited a field of the FRG based research on seed treatment conducted by University of Gondar (Amhara region) to monitor the progress and to provide technical advice.

Pulse farmers in Dembia village, North Gondar have been exposed to the threat of cutworms (genus: Agrotis). Researchers from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Gondar, are conducting the experiment with farmers to identify the effectiveness of using seed treatment against the insect pests/plant diseases, and its economical efficiency. It was only 10 days after sowing but differences between seed treated and un-treated plots were observed.

Dr. Niide also paid a courtesy calls on the President and the Vice President for academics of the University, and confirmed further collaborations with FRG II on technology generation through FRG approach.
