Rice Workshop: Rice in Ethiopian Agricultural Development

FRG II organized a workshop on rice on February 21 by inviting wide range of stakeholders to discuss practical intervention for rice promotion in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has been experiencing fast change in rice production partly by foreign investors to irrigated rice production but, in a similar or more important degree, more and more small scale farmers have started lowland rice production in poorly drained land and upland rice in its surrounding areas in the last 10 years or so. For injera, the national staple food, now useing rice flour has become popular among people and purchasing rice flour for injera is not difficult in Addis Ababa in these days. To support rice production effectively under such changes being happening, both much wider stakeholders' interaction and clear government leadership are desired. The workshop has provided an opportunity to realize and promote such horizontal and vertical interventions for the rice research and development.
