Project News

2010-11-11

The Project has been officially launched

The Record of Discussions on "the Project for Improvement of District Health Management Capacity in South Sulawesi Province (PRIMA-Kesehatan) Phase2" had been signed between the Head of Center for Health Promotion, Ministry of Health, Republic of Indonesia and the Chief Representative of JICA Indonesia Office on November 11th. The project is planned to be implemented until March 2014, and the target area is 3 districts in South Sulawesi Province, namely, Barru, Bulukumba and Wajo. The Project aims to establish a primary health care mechanism in which community and government work together.

In Phase1 of this Project, which had been implemented from February 2007 to February 2010, a mechanism in which community takes initiative to improve their own health environment had been developed. In the target area of Phase 1, positive impacts have been observed such as increase in number of family toilets and water purifiers, decrease in infectious disease cases and so on. Taking these good outcomes into account, the Government of Indonesia requested the Government of Japan to continue cooperation in order to further strengthen the sustainability of the mechanism and to disseminate the mechanism. JICA Makassar Field Office have been working together with the Indonesian counterparts at each level of National, Provincial, District, Sub-district and Village on the preparation for the Phase 2 since May 2010. As a result of intensive discussion and careful field study, all the stakeholders agreed on the Project Plan which focuses on the establishment of mechanism in which local government supports the initiative of community in order to make the mechanism sustainable.

It is expected that this Project will lead to the improvement of health indicators in the target Districts, and contribute to the achievement of Millennium Development Goals in Indonesia.
