Ulos Production Area in Samosir District, North Sumatra Province Visited

The target industry of Region I (Kalimantan and Sumatra) was discussed long by the Ministry of Industry (MoI). In early June, the ulos fashion industry in Samosir District, North Sumatra Province was selected as a target industry of the project. Ulos is traditional woven fabric with motives unique to the Batak who are found predominantly in North Sumatra, such as geometric patterns. Ulos is a core competence commodity of the district while Samosir region is designed as a target area of the industry cluster program (woven fabric fashion industry) by MoI after the project commenced. Thus, the ulos fashion industry has been attracting the attention of both the central and local governments.

From 19 to 21 June 2013, the JICA Expert Team held a kick-off meeting with the regional Dinas for Industry & Trade, and also visited ulos workshops in Samosir District and its markets. Ulos is used mostly as a piece of cloth like a stole in ceremonies such as weddings and religious rituals, and now faces the challenges of diversifying its usage for higher added value. On the other hand, Samosir District, situated by Lake Toba with magnificent scenery, attracts many visitors from within and outside Indonesia. Taking advantage of a popular tourist destination, the project aims to expand tourist and local markets through the diversification of ulos products.
