PEGRES Sensitization and Gender Study Report Sharing Workshops in Busia County

The Project on Enhancing Gender Responsive Extension Services in Kenya (PEGRES) organized a series of workshops to sensitize Busia County staff on project operations and to share and validate the Gender study report with staff and stakeholders. The workshops were conducted on 25th to 30th June 2015 in Busia County, Kenya at the border of Kenya and Uganda, basking in the beauty of Lake Victoria, the biggest fresh water lake in Africa.

On 25th June 2015, participants during the staff sensitization workshop were drawn from Agriculture sector, Social Development and Gender and Youth departments from the County and Teso South Sub-county. The workshop covered policy direction of Gender mainstreaming, PEGRES overview and Eastern Africa Agricultural Productivity Project (EAAPP) activities in Teso South Sub-county.

The report of findings of the Gender Study was shared and validated by the County and Sub-county staff and stakeholders in the workshops held on 26th to 30th June, 2015. The study had been conducted by PEGRES in collaboration with EAAPP in December 2014, to identify gender issues in cassava value chain for purposes of mapping out appropriate interventions.

The participants of the workshops agreed with identified gender issues and made recommendations to address the gender gaps. They proposed interventions for "Identification of entry points for male and female youth and deliberate efforts to ensure their participation in trainings as well as in other activities in cassava value chain" and; "The County agricultural sector policy makers to consider creation of operational Gender Units at County and Sub-county levels to assist in mainstreaming gender into agricultural activities".

PEGRES will incorporate the recommendations from the County staff and stakeholders into the final report and implement proposed interventions in collaboration with EAAPP, the County government and stakeholders.
