PEGRES Gender Baseline Surveys

PEGRES completed its gender baseline surveys in its partner project sites in Nyeri, Busia and Kirinyaga Counties. The surveys were conducted in Nyeri, Busia and Kirinyaga Counties in September, November and December 2015, respectively.

Gender studies in the partner project sites highlighted gender issues in division of labour and decision making process. The gender baseline surveys were conducted to benchmark levels of gender inequalities that will serve as the basis to measure the degree of possible changes resulting from the Project's interventions. The aspects covered during the survey included the division of labour in productive and reproductive activities, and access to and control over resources and benefits.

A total of 597 farmers were interviewed comprised of 208 in Nyeri, 207 in Busia and 182 in Kirinyaga; who are the beneficiaries of the initial partner projects, East African Agricultural Productivity Project (EAAPP) and Rice-Based and Market-oriented Agriculture Promotion Project (RiceMAPP). The number is composed of the target farmers of PEGRES interventions as well as the control groups. The data will be analyzed to highlight the current trends of gender relations among these farmers, which will later be compared with the end line survey at the end of the Project period in which the same groups of farmers would again be interviewed.
