PEGRES Gender Training of Trainers (ToT) Courses

PEGRES conducted Agriculture Sector Staff Training Needs Assessment (TNA) in Mathira West, Teso South; and Mwea East and West Sub-counties to establish their levels of Knowledge and Skills on Gender and Training Management. Findings revealed inadequacies which prompted the project in collaboration with target Counties to organize Gender Training of Trainers (ToT) Courses from December 2015 to March 2016. The Courses involved theory classes and field exercises each covered in three days; and targeting 18 to 20 extension officers in each County.

Theory classes basically covered Policy Directions on Gender Mainstreaming, Basic Gender Concepts and frequently used Gender Analysis Tools, Gender Action Plan, Family Budgeting, Integrating Gender aspects into project cycle; and Training and Facilitation Skills. Field exercises, with 40 farmers composed of men, women, male youth and female youth, enabled the ToT participants to practice what they had learnt in the class.

The Gender ToTs were successful and evaluation reports indicated that the staff appreciated the training and noted it was very practical and timely, and will enhance their gender sensitive extension service provision. They recommended the training could be up-scaled to cover other staff and refresher courses for sustainability of gender mainstreaming of agricultural activities. At the end of training, the ToT participants developed Training Plans and Budgets for farmers' Gender Awareness and Family Budgeting trainings in their respective Sub-counties. They envisaged these trainings will improve the gender and power relations at household and community levels; and contribute to livelihoods improvement of smallholder female and male farmers, pastoralists and fisher-folks in project target areas.
