Visiting Model Schools (June 24, 2014)

Photo

In this Project, apart from 4 Pilot Schools, 10 schools are designated as Model Schools. In order to start the effective activities supporting those Model Schools from the Project's 2nd year (June 2015), the Project Team visited 4 Model Schools located in Luzon Island to understand their current situation. We visited the following high schools: Angeles City National Trade School in Pampanga, Balagtas National Agricultural High School in Bulacan, Bataan School of Fisheries in Bataan, and Bukig National Agricultural and Technical School in Cagayan.

Angeles City National Trade School has a high potential to develop linkages with industries taking advantage of its proximity to Clark Industrial Park. The pilot activities of San Pedro Relocation Center National High School (SPRCNHS) may be adopted and utilized in this school.

Balagtas National Agricultural High School and Bukig National Agricultural and Technical School offer agricultural education. Balagtas National Agricultural High School has a small campus, thus utilizes 1 ha lot from neighboring farmers for farming. This school tries to enhance ICT as well as agriculture considering the relevance of ICT education in finding job opportunities. Bukig National Agricultural and Technical School is located in Cagayan Province. Because of the limited access to university or college in this area, demands for Senior High School Program of this school seem to be high.

Bataan School of Fisheries is the first or the second largest fishery school in the Philippines. There were 15 graduates from senior high school last year, 9 of which proceeded to Bataan State University to deepen their knowledge and skills on Fish Technology. Driven by increasing demands of textile and garment manufacturing industries in Mariveles, 25 students of Garments course experienced OJT for 4 to 5 months and 15 students found the job closely related to garments.

Each Model School provides tech-voc education based on the needs of the community, teachers, facility and available equipment. There are approximately 80 agricultural high schools and 40 fishery high schools in the Philippines. It is expected that in addition to 4 Pilot Schools specialized in Trade and Arts, good practices and know-how are accumulated and shared among Model Schools in other fields, including agricultural and fishery. Eventually, such practices and lessons learnt can be utilized by 280 tech-voc high schools nationwide. The Project Team will visit the rest of Model Schools to prepare for the activities in the Project's 2nd year.
