Provision of Equipment

The Project Team reviewed practices of four pilot schools to improve their Tech-Voc education. First, discussions took place with the schools to find out how they understood their strengths and weaknesses, and what areas should be enhanced. Then, the Project Team arranged for Industrial Linkage Coordinators (ILCs) of those schools to visit companies and conduct interviews to identify the gaps between the competencies of their graduates and the needs of industries. The Project Team also reviewed whether the schools could deliver adequate lessons to students corresponding to TESDA regulations.

The Project Team found that some challenges were caused by inadequacy of equipment. Based on the findings, the Project provided the schools with the following equipment (all equipment was delivered to the schools by December 19, 2014) to improve their Tech-Voc education.

RESPSCI · Existing equipment was too old and students had difficulties getting used to new equipment in the industrial setting.

To strengthen its housekeeping, and food & beverage service course. Cooking equipment (a gas fryer, food processors, blenders, juicers, etc.), glassware, and housekeeping cart
SPRCNHS · Industry preferred to hire graduates with CAD skills.
· SPRCNHS had many courses; however, the quantity of equipment was inadequate.
· To enable its students to use CAD.
· To supply equipment to courses lacking it.
Desktop computers, motorcycles, welding machines, sewing machines and safeguard (helmets, aprons, goggles, gloves), etc.
STVS · Welders were required in the Philippines and in many countries
· STVS had made great efforts to enhance its welding course; however, the number of welding machines was insufficient.
· Safety of students was not properly ensured.
To enhance its welding course. Welding machines, Angle grinders, safeguard (helmets, aprons, goggles, ear plugs, safety shoes), etc.

The schools commented that "Because of the additional machines, students now have enough time to practice." And "The total amount for equipment provided was rather small; however the needs of the schools were well considered." At the same time, some positive factors were reported such as;

– The equipment provided to DARRTHS was also utilized during the teacher training in Quezon City.

– The supplier of the equipment provided to STVS donated additional equipment and invited STVS teachers and student to its offices to provide safety guidance.
