Monitoring of 6 Model Schools – Recipients of Competitive Grants

The project team monitored the 6 model schools (Please also see the project news of 2015-11-19"Competitive Grant Project (CGP) has been implemented").

Equipment and facilities were procured and installed at the 6 schools. The 6 schools are at the stage of preparing and implementing the activities they planned. The following article reports the current situation of the 6 schools.

<Arts and Trade Schools>

Tagum National Trade School (Tagum City, Region XI)

On February 29, the turnover ceremony was held at the school. The teachers and students in the school, community, governmental officers, and industries near the school were invited to the ceremony.

An officer of TESDA stated, "There is no other school in Tagum City, which has such updated facilities. Please utilize them for quality education for the students." As shown in this message, the school's future success is greatly anticipated.

Opol National Secondary Technical School(Municipality of Opol, Region X)

The project team interviewed the student who had experienced work immersion in the hotel in a big city, Cagayan de Oro, near the school. In the work immersion, the student experienced all the activities in the kitchen and sometimes did the same work as a main chef did.

He stated the difference between practicum in the school and the work immersion as follows: "There is a big time-pressure." "There is some cooking equipment which I never saw in the school practicum, so I made mistakes when I operated it."

The student obtained a job offer from the hotel and is going to work there after graduation.

<Aquaculture>

Bataan School of Fisheries (Bataan City, Region III)

The procured equipment has attracted students' attention and interest, so that the students started to regard Aquaculture as a ‘cool' subject. The early registration for the Aquaculture SHS course starting from 2016/2017 was more than expected. The school also will become a showcase for the community and their neighbors, so that many people will come to observe the facility.

Iligan City National School of Fisheries (Iligan City, Region X)

On February 24, the construction of the hatchery facility was completed. The school started to hatch koi, tilapia, gold fish, guppy, and molly. The teachers will maintain the facility during the summer vacation (April to May) for preparing the facility for student practicum starting from next school year, 2016/2017.

<Agriculture>

Bukig National Agricultural Technical School (Tuguegarao City, Region II)

The cassava field is being tilled by the tractor procured through the project. The school plans to till more fields. The students also participated in the tilling as their practicum. The first cassava planted in the tilled field will be harvested in August 2016.

Rogongon Agricultural High School (Iligan City, Region X)

The students have cultivated a nursery of "falcata" tree (legume, a broad leaved tree). The nursery is the biggest in the area, so not only neighbors but also people at a distance come to observe it, which is actually greatly enhancing the presence of the school in the community.
