On 31st July 2014, field visit to Muong Phang Commune was carried out with the visitors from the Japanese private sector, namely Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd. (SFC), ASKUL Corporation (ASKUL), and Yanmar Environmental Sustainability Support Association (YESSA), as well as some other workshop participants from the previous day.
These three Japanese companies have been supporting REDD+[1] demonstration activities in Muong Phang. The purpose of the visit this time was to understand better the status of demonstration activities implemented in cooperation with SUSFORM-NOW.
After one-hour car ride from Dien Bien Phu City, the participants arrived at Long Long Dam, which was constructed thanks to the proposal from the historical hero, General Vo Nguyen Giap, who led the battle of Dien Bien Phu. At the dam management office, SUSFORM-NOW experts provided briefing to the participants on the progress of forest management activities in Muong Phang.
After leaving the dam office, the participants visited Long Nghiu Village, in which, the participants had commemorative planting of local apple (tao meo) seedlings with villagers. In addition, they visited livelihood development models and experienced villagers' life style. The participants wished and promised to come back to see these local apple trees again in the village. More REDD+ field activities would be implemented by then.
