Survey on biosafety situation of Regional Institutes (RIs)

Survey on biosafety situation of RIs were conducted in Pasteur Institute Ho Chi Minh (PIHCMC), Pasteur Institute Nha Trang (PINT) and Tay Nguyen Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (TIHE) from June 13th – 17th with participation of National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE). Participants included Dr. Shinohara from NIID, Mr. Miki (SUGA company), Dr. Thuy (NIHE), Dr. Yoneyama and Mr. Ikari (JICA-NIHE Project Office).

PIHCMC with large organizational structure has experience difficulties in biosafety activities. Biosafety Department was established in May, Ms. Tam - the head of department has put a lot of effort to improve biosafety activities in her Institute but it need a lot of support in reality. TIHE will move to new location in a few years, they highly focus on training for person in charge of biosafety. Each Institute will assign one staff to take part in training course in Japan to obtain knowledge and experience for biosafety activities.

From the survey, expert evaluated that equipment maintenance of biosafety cabinet was not implemented regularly. It requires support from the project. Besides, Dr. Shinohara also commented on ineffective issues in laboratory such as washing sink, PPE usage, shoes and area division.
