Training courses on GMT Anthrax, Rabies and Cholerae

Training course on GMT and laboratory diagnosis technique is one of the main activities of the Project. From end of July to begin of August, three training courses on Anthax, Rabies and Cholerae were organized in National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE).

Training course on GMT Anthrax was organized from 26th – 28th July with the participation of Dr. Okutani from NIID, Dr. Ha (Head of Rare Bacteria Laboratory from NIHE) and six participants from Pasteur Institute Nha Trang, Pasteur Institute Ho Chi Minh and Tay Nguyen Insitute of Hygiene and Epidemiology. Participants implemented bacteria culture in BSL 3 laboratory.

PCR technique is the quick and accurate method for genetic testing. Training course on this technique was organized in BSL 2 laboratory during short period of time. As Anthrax epidemic outbreaks in the northern mountainous area sharing border with China, it is important to develop system of sample collection, transport and laboratory network of surrounding provinces. Participants from Institutes will play the role to develop testing system to respond in emergency case.

Training course on Rabies was organized from 1st – 5th August with the participation of Dr. Inoue (NIID), Dr. Kieu Anh (Head of Rabies Laboratory in NIHE) and eight participants from Pasteur Institute Nha Trang, Tay Nguyen Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Gia Lai PCPM. The content of training course was samples collection, storage, transport, fluorescent antibody and PCR.

In Vietnam, there are about 100 patients infected by this disease; hence, it is important to establish and strengthen laboratory system.

Training course on Cholerae was organized from 2nd – 9th August with the participation of Dr. Izumiya (NIID), Dr. Binh Minh (Head of Cholerae Laboratory, NIHE) and other seven staff in Cholerae laboratory. The training focused on PCR method to enhance diagnosis technique in NIHE. In the future, training on PCR method will be implemented for other Institutes and PCPMs in Vietnam.
