Training course on diagnosis technique and basic knowledge required for Rabies diagnosis

Training course on diagnosis technique and basic knowledge required for rabies diagnosis was organized in Thai Nguyen from July 4 – 6, 2012. Participants included 49 nurses, veterinarian from PCPMs in Thai Nguyen, Ha Giang, Cao Bang and Son La. Lecturers included Dr. Inoue from NIID (Japan), Dr. Kieu Anh (Head of Rabies laboratory in NIHE) and Dr. Hoang Van Tan (Deputy Head of Epidemiology Department in NIHE). Sixty-eight cases of rabies in 2009, 78 cases in 2010 and 110 cases in 2011 were reported in Vietnam. Vaccination, rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, can rescue bitten human only if injected immediately after bitten by rabid dogs. Otherwise, it results in 100% of death of bitten human. There were 91 infected cases (82.7%) in 15 northern provinces in 2011. In order to improve the current situation and reduce the number of infected cases, it is necessary to strengthen not only the capacity of laboratory diagnosis but also effective medical and public education. Hence, this training course was organized to provide participant necessary knowledge of rabies diagnosis and Thai Nguyen PCPM is expected to play a central role as a diagnosis center of rabies in the laboratory network in the northern provinces.
