The second training course on Pest laboratory diagnosis was organized in Tay Nguyen Institute of Hygieneand Epidemiology (TIHE) August 7-9th, 2012 with the participation as lecturers of Ms. Nguyen Thuy Tram and Dr. Hoang Thi Thu Ha from Rare bacteria department, National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), Associate Prof. Nguyen Thi Hong Hanh (Vice Director, NIHE) Dr. Dang Tuan Dat (Director, TIHE) and Dr. Takahashi (Bacteriology, NIID、Japan). Total number of participants was 10 people including 3 staffs of TIHE, 1 staff of Pasteur Institute Ho Chi Minh City, 1 staff of Pasteur Institute Nha Trang, 1 staff of Gia Lai PCPM, 2 staffs of Dak Lak PCPM and 2 staffs of Kon Tum PCPM.

Training program covered a wide-range knowledge from theory such as epidemiology, bacteriology, sample collection, storage, transportation and biosafety to practice such as PCR and Real-time PCR. There was no plague case reported in Vietnam in 10 recent years. However, the latest plague case happened in 1999 in Tay Nguyen province, therefore, PCPMs in this region still keep testing activities of Yersinia pestis periodically. It is essential to update its knowledge and to acquire rapid, simple and effective diagnosis techniques as well as classical bacteriologic isolation method in order to prepare against its emerging-outbreak or bioterrorism. Participants also had opportunity to practice PCR method and share information with other laboratory colleagues to strengthen the network among NIHE, Regional Institutes and PCPMs. They requested additional training course to be better hand at practice of testing activities. The next training course would be organized according to the program based on more improved SOP to ensure the successful technical transfer.
