Third and fourth training courses on laboratory diagnosis of Cholera

While cholera epidemic regularly occurred from 2007 to 2010 in Vietnam, it temporarily declined from 2011 to 2012. In order to control its epidemic in the future, Construction of testing system and enhancement of diagnosis technique are essential in order to control its epidemic in the future by the means of constant training courses with substantial update-content.

Third training course on laboratory diagnosis of Cholera was taken place from January 14th to 17th in National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE).

The training course covered the wide range of fields from theory of detection to practices of GMT (Good Microbiology Technique), PCR method, isolation method according to SOP prepared by NIHE. Lecturers included Drs. Binh Minh, Ngo Tuan Cuong (Bacteriology Dept., NIHE), Ms. Tran Dieu Linh (Biosafety and Quality Management Dept., NIHE) and a short-term expert Dr. Izumiya (Chief, Department of Bacteriology 1, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Japan). Two staffs from Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang, two staffs from each PCPM – Hue, Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, Nghe An and one staff from Da Nang PCPM attended the training course. The total numbers were 11 participants. The training course covered from basic bacteria culture method to applied molecular genetic method of PCR, using blind samples. Participants also discussed each another on the results obtained the course and shared experience in laboratory diagnosis of Cholera in order to strengthen the laboratory network in northern and central area of Vietnam.

After the training course in NIHE, another fourth course was held from January 21stto 24th in Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City (PIHCMC) – a central point of laboratory network in the southern area. Lecturers were Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Lan (Head of Enterobacteria, PIHCMC) and Dr. Izumiya with the participation of 12 staffs from PIHCMC and 2 staffs from Tay Nguyen Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology. In practice sections, lecturers introduced PCR method for a rapid screening test of Cholera direct from samples of faces. In addition to lecture on GMT and biosafety, the advanced molecular epidemiological technique was also presented in the training course to improve the capacity of diagnosis and knowledge for participants. In order to address participant's request, lecturers also explained about safety transportation of faces samples. The next training course on Cholera in PIHCMC will be organized for staffs from PCPMs in the southern region to strengthen the laboratory network.
