Training course on biosafety and SOP just before regular operation of the mobile BSL3 in Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City

The mobile BSL3 installed in Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City (PIHCMC) was transported from NIHE, Hanoi May 2nd, 2013. Training course on maintenance and management of the mobile BSL3 was carried out in the OJT manner with checking the record from the time of transportation up to the present. Training course on biosafety and SOP just before regular operation of the mobile BSL3 was also taken place July 8 ~ 10, 2013 from the views-point of laboratory users. A Japanese short-term expert, Mr. Miki, (Suga Kogyo Company. Japan) and an engineer, Mr. Dung, (Biosafety and Management Department, NIHE) reconfirmed the record so far of operations and provided advice to engineers of PIHCMC for optimal operation and maintenance. Dr. Van (Vice-director) and Dr. Lan (Head of Laboratory of Enteric bacteria) in charge of administration and management of biosafety, respectively, planed and prepared the training program, SOP and teaching materials just suitable for the mobile BSL3 with the advice of Dr. Shinohara (Division of Biosafety, NIID Japan), a short-term expert. Total twenty-two engineers and researchers, who have a plan to use, participated in the training course on biosafety and SOP. Ten out of participants entered into laboratory of the mobile BSL3 and learned the practical procedures in the manner of OJT (procedure for enter-exit, how-to-check and use of laboratory facility and functions, procedure for emergency). Furthermore, 10 trainees with PEE learned practical procedures how to use BSC and to follow GMT in the manner of OJT in the HIV BSL2 laboratory. This training course was performed according to the program planed by PIHCMC researchers in charge of biosafety together with a Japanese expert. Participants grew up to understand the theory, concept and practice of biosafety and took active part in discussion in a tense atmosphere just before the first regular operation of the mobile BSL3 in PIHCMC. As far as high motivation and quality of participants is concerned, it is highly expected for PIHCMC to play a pivotal role in laboratory diagnosis of highly hazardous transmissible pathogens in the southern province of Vietnam.
