Workshop on basic knowledge and testing techniques for diagnosis of rabies was taken place in a couple of days July 15 and 16, 2013 to survey the progress and present situations in 4 regional institutes (RIs) and provincial centers for preventative medicine (PCPMs) in order to construct laboratory network. Total 27 participants came together from diverse regions: 9 from RIs such as National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE)、Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang(PINT), Tay Nguyen Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology(TIHE)and Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City (PIHCMC); 14 from PCPMs such as Gia Lai、Dak Lak、Yen Bai、Nghe An、Phu Tho、Son La and Thai Nguyen; 4 from medical and veterinary fields such as National Hospital of Tropical Diseases、National Veterinary Diagnostic Center、Department of Animal Health and Veterinary Department in Ho Chi Minh City. Dr Inoue from NIID Japan and Dr. Kieu Anh from NIHE served as lecturers in the course. They gave participants clear-cut lectures on a wide-range of knowledge covering basic of biosafety, epidemiology, clinical diagnosis and prevention in order to construct laboratory for diagnosis of rabies by the means of training documents and DVD videos. Related teaching materials and DVD videos were distributed to participants, which makes it possible to educate persons concerned in the public health the necessity and role of rabies diagnosis laboratory in each region. Researchers in charge between NIHE and PIHCM made discussion to construct the external quality assessment (EQA) system concerning laboratory diagnosis of rabies in Vietnam. This step is expected as a precedent model of laboratory network in diagnosis of infectious diseases in Vietnam. Furthermore, introduction of neutralization test system with pseudo-rabies virus from NIID into NIHE provied a first step to evaluate the activity of infection inhibition by netralizing antibody induced with rabie-vaccination.
