The fifth training courses on laboratory diagnosis of Cholera

Cholera is classified into Class A as one of the important infectious diseases in Vietnam, Construction of diagnosis system and enhancement of diagnosis technique are essential by the means of periodical training courses with substantial update-content in order to control its epidemic in the future. The project organized so far several training courses on Cholera diagnosis in national Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) and Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City (PIHCMC).

The fifth training course on laboratory diagnosis of Cholera was taken place from December 4th to 6th in Pasteur Institute of NhaTrang (PINT), Regional Institute in Central regions of Vietnam. Lecturers included Drs. Binh Minh, Cuong, Tu (Bacteriology Dept., NIHE), and a short-term expert Dr. Izumiya (Chief, Department of Bacteriology 1, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Japan).MsGiang and DrTatsumi Leader attended this course from the Project Office.Nine staffs from Pasteur Institute of NhaTrang, two staffs from each RI-PIHCM and TIHE, five staffs from each PCPM – Hue, Da Nang, Can Tho, TienGiang and Don Nai PCPM attended the training course. The total numbers of participants were 16. The training course co-organized by Dr. Tam (Biosafety Dept., PINT) covered from basic bacteria culture method to applied molecular genetic method of PCR, including genotyping of Cholera by Multiplex PCR method as basics to construct the Cholera Surveillance System in the future. Dr. Izumiya also gave the trainees a lecture on Cholera Surveillance System, in which it was explained and underlined to construct the effective Cholera Surveillance System by the genetic analysis of bacteria's genome with Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis obtained from outbreaks in order to control Cholera epidemics in the future.

Participants and lectures also discussed each other on the results obtained from the course and shared experience in laboratory diagnosis of Cholera in order to strengthen the laboratory network in Southern and Central area of Vietnam. The next training course on Cholera will be organizedin Tay Nguyen Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology for staffs from PCPMs in the Highland region to strengthen the laboratory network.
