Training course for laboratory diagnosis of rabies was taken place in Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh Cityfrom 10 Nov. to 13 Nov.in order to develop laboratory network in the southern region of Vietnam. Total 14 participants came together from diverse regions: 12 from RIs such as National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE)、Pasteur Institute of NhaTrang(PINT)and Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City (PIHCMC) ;2 from medical and veterinary fields such as Department of Animal Health and VeterinaryDepartment in Ho Chi Minh City (AHD-HCMC). Dr Inouefrom NIID Japan and Dr. Tuyet Thu and hercolleaguesfrom NIHE served as lecturers or supervisors in the course. The training course wasco-organized by Drs. Thanh Long (PIHCMC), Tuyet Thu and Inoue, and included a wide range of knowledge and practicecoveringmethods of antigendetectionrelated tolaboratorydiagnosis, verification of usualgenetictesting (conventional RT-PCR), and theory and techniques of novelgenetictesting (Realtime RT-PCR : demonstration and usage of an artificial positive control), genetictypingmethod of positive samples (sequencing and phylogenicanalysis), practicalmethodsrelated to capture, clinicaldiagnosis, autopsy, sampling and safetransfer of suspectedanimalsnecessory for definitiveevaluation of post exposureprophylactics (PEP) to patients, and basic of biosafetyby the means of lectures with training documents, practice and discussion.

Not onlytesting of patients but alsotesting of samplesderivedfromanimals of concernsuch as rabiddogs are essential as zoonoticmeasures for laboratorydiagnosis of rabies. The training course provided a progress in construction of laboratory network between RI and veterinaryfields in the regionthrough sharing and standarization of the methods for diagnosis and GMT/biosafetyamongRIs and AHD-HCMC.
