Project Activity: Training course at Central Hospitals

Training for medical staff in 6 target provinces is one of main activities of the project in order to improve their capacity to strengthen the medical service in general and DOHA and referral system in particular. In 2014, Project has collaborated and contracted with 4 central hospitals to organize 5 training courses, in which there are 2 three-month technical transfer packages in National Pediatrics Hospital and National Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, and 3 short-term courses in Viet Duc Hospital and Bach Mai Hospital. The details of trainings are as below:

1. Patient Safety training at Viet Duc Hospital

The training was conducted from 14th to 16th May 2014 at Viet Duc Hospital. There are 30 trainees from 6 target provinces with the background of being nurses and doctors with working experiences on hospital management and teaching. During 3 days of studying, trainees had chances to learn various knowledge of safety in injection and transfusion, in prevention of nosocomial infection, in operation and drug usage from rich-experienced trainers in Viet Duc Hospital. They also shared their own experiences to colleagues from different provinces. After the training, 29/30 trainees got certificates with good result of post-test and high evaluation from trainers. However, both trainers and trainees recommended extending the course length to 1 week for more detailed valuable information on safety issues and careful selecting trainees with same background and experiences in order to enhance effectiveness of the course.

2. DOHA and Referral management

This 3-day training course is one of key activities of the project to strengthen capacity of DOHA staff in target provinces. 30 trainees who have been working on DOHA and referral attended the course in Training and DOHA Center (TDC) in Bach Mai Hospital, one of the leading hospitals nationwide. The course received top policy-makers from Ministry of Health lecturing on legal documents relating to Direction and referral activities such as newly introduced Circular 14/TT-BYT, and senior practicians from TDC Bach Mai guiding on continuous medical education (CME) planning, training management, and actual situation being shared in Bach Mai and in some particular provinces. After the course, trainees are able to understand DOHA and referral system well, record the forms correctly, make CME training plan and organize referral meeting properly. The training (13-15/08/2014) had been finished with high recognition from both trainers and trainees for the quality of the course. The Project expects that all trainees will share what they have learnt from this course to colleagues to improve the DOHA and referral system in their respective provinces.

3. Nursing Management

Nursing activity is recognized as an essential to improve the medical service in hospital. The project, therefore, had supported several chief nurses from 6 targeted provinces to attend the course on nursing management. The training was organized at Bach Mai Hospital in 7 days, from 19/08/2014 to 27/08/2014. After the training, trainees are able to perform leadership skill effectively, understand the patient safety and quality management, and present the methods of clinical training management and evaluation in CME, etc.

4. Technical Transfer Packages: Emergency Courses in National Pediatrics Hospital and National Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital

These two 3-month courses were conducted in quarter 1 and quarter 2 of 2014 (Japanese fiscal year). Four trainees of Emergency in Obstetrics Course and 8 trainees of Emergency in pediatrics course from Lao Cai, Hoa Binh, Dien Bien, Lai Chau had enough time to learn theory and practice from professional trainers. Each package included a trip to each province for monitoring and on-the-job training to all trainees at their own hospitals. Through the course, trainees obtained basic skills of care, treatment and cure for emergency cases. Contents of the emergency in pediatrics course were respiratory system, convulsion case, treatment for cerebral edema case, etc. Content of the emergency in obstetrics course included ectopic pregnancy, threat of miscarriage, placenta abruption, etc. Three among 4 trainees of Emergency in Obstetrics Course highly evaluated the training in term of sufficient content, usefulness, quality of organizer, trainers and training methods. As about the course on Emergency in Pediatrics, all trainees found the course very useful to daily practice at their respective hospitals.
