Background

The Tokyo Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit 2021 addressed the global concern of malnutrition and acknowledged the importance of further efforts to exert a collective impact on nutrition through collaboration among governments and development partners.
JICA made the JICA Nutrition Declaration to realize our shared goal of "nutrition for all." JICA expressed a strong commitment to further promote IFNA, the Initiative of Food and Nutrition Security in Africa. At N4G 2021, IFNA also announced its commitment to “nutrition improvement in Africa”or the so-called “Africa commitment."
The AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government has adopted “nutrition” as the 2022 theme (Building Resilience in Nutrition on the African Continent: Accelerate the Human Capital, Social and Economic Development). During the AU's Year of Nutrition in 2022, AUDA-NEPAD will strongly emphasize home-grown school feeding (HGSF), for which AUDA-NEPAD is developing guidelines. Additionally, the Government of Japan joined the School Meals Coalition in January 2022.
HGSF relies on multi-sectoral coordination among education, health, and agriculture. It can also be strengthened through adoption of a nutrient-focused approach. HGSF has its own trilemma regarding balancing affordability, nutritional balance, and local livelihoods.

Key Questions

  • How HGSF can contribute to food and nutrition security against the recent food crisis?
  • What are the positive and negative impact of implementing HGSF on cost?
  • What is the impact of introducing HGSF on the community? How to make positive impact?
  • What are the challenges in supply chain and school feeding systems to implement sustainable HGSF?

Objective

This event aims at introducing IFNA’s achievements, approaches, and future direction, with particular attention to the potential of home-grown school feeding, thereby calling for broader partnership regarding extracting nutrition from food and agriculture.
