Background

SDG16 is an ambitious goal; it requires each nation to go beyond simply establishing formal institutions responsible for upholding the“rule of law” - it envisions a situation where every person's rights are actually protected on the ground. To achieve this goal, access to justice for women in Africa, many of whom become the target of sexual and gender-based violence, is an issue of paramount importance for the international community.
When considering ways to tackle this issue, we need to learn from best practices on the ground and also focus on the realities that women actually face including the lasting impact of COVID-19.

Key Questions

• What are the essential elements for designing and delivering people-centered access to justice initiatives?
• What does it mean to ensure women’s meaningful participation in the justice sector -- what it includes and how the United Nations, Member States and civil society can best effectively advocate?
• What are the major challenges that women in Africa face (physical, financial, and cultural barriers, among others) in participation and accessing justice?
• What are the roles of government ministries and agencies, communities, NGOs, donors and others in advocating for, and supporting effective and sustainable efforts to improve people-centered access to justice for women in Africa?

Objective

This event will use the umbrella of TICAD 8 as an opportunity for partners, governments, international cooperation and strategic stakeholders to discuss the current situation of access to justice for women in Africa; to share good practices and initiatives from the Africa region; and to discuss the way forward for improving access to justice of women in Africa from the perspective of people-centered justice and transforming justice systems to better deliver justice for women. The event will look at issues of gender equality in the judiciary; innovative processes for improving access to justice for women within national institutions; the role of civil society for advancing gender justice and presenting good practices of legal aid.
