The history of Japanese migration overseas can be seen as a launching point for modern Japan.
The Japanese Overseas Migration Museum opened in 2002. Its purpose is to educate the public about Japanese migrants and the state of their descendants, who are known as “Nikkei,” today.
This museum displays historical materials related to overseas migration. Its particular emphasis is on North America, and especially Hawai‘i, which was the starting point for Japanese emigration in the 19th century. The museum also has materials related to Latin American countries, where the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) played an important role in migration activities following World War II. Visitors to this museum can learn about the history of Japanese immigrants and Nikkei. The first immigrants and their Nikkei descendants sought happiness for their families, even as they contributed to the development of the countries to which they migrated. And they did all of this while overcoming the challenges that come with living in a foreign culture and environment.
