The exhibit here is a scaled-down replica of a vegetable-decorated float built by Japanese farmers for the Rose Festival held in Portland, Oregon, in the United States.
The Rose Festival has been held there between May and June every year since 1907. The festival’s main event is its Grand Floral Parade. This event features a variety of floats that process [pro-CESS] through the city. Many Japanese who immigrated to the United States worked on farms or ranches. Japanese migrants in Portland in 1921 created this float featuring their fruits and vegetables so they could participate in the parade.
This float laden with their produce symbolizes the important role that Japanese immigrants in the U.S. have played in agriculture and livestock farming.
