This exhibit shows the kind of trunks that immigrants might have used when they moved overseas. It contains the sorts of things they would have typically brought, including clothing, entertainment such as Japanese chess or playing cards, and the farming and carpentry tools needed for developing land at their destination. Accessories and sewing tools were also essential for daily life. Dictionaries in Japanese and local languages were also indispensable. Since radios, cameras, and such were luxury items at the time, few people would have had any. Family photos and other mementos would have also had special meaning for the reminders they brought of the immigrants’ connections with Japan.
To the left, there is a tactile display where you can take a quiz about the items immigrants carried with them.
