What motivated Japanese emigrants to leave Japan, and how did they prepare for their journeys? This exhibit shows you some of the advertisements that emigrants saw and the things that they took with them.
On the walls here you can observe some of the posters that encouraged people to migrate overseas, recruitment brochures describing conditions in the destination countries, and items from “migrant lodges” where emigrants could learn about how to prepare for their journeys overseas. If you look at the example of a trunk used by immigrants, you can see the kinds of tools and daily necessities they packed for their destinations.
Immigration to foreign countries was suspended while Japan was at war.
Towards the back of this exhibit, you can find information about the Yguazú colony in Paraguay, which was established once migration resumed after the end of World War II.
