In today’s world, we are used to traveling abroad and learning about foreign countries, but not so long ago for many traveling abroad was like entering a different world. Even so, people still made the decision to leave their home country to try to live somewhere else. They had many different reasons to do so, including their personal circumstances and the situation at the time and in the places they came from.
For example, when people began migrating to Hawai‘i and the United States at the end of the 19th century, one of the main things that encouraged them was letters from relatives and friends that talked about the high wages and good working conditions available abroad. As you can imagine, getting favorable information from trusted people was a strong influence on the decision to go abroad. In addition, local newspapers ran features about people from the same region who had achieved success overseas, or about the Western-style houses built by people who had made their fortunes overseas and returned to their hometowns. All of this made going overseas seem appealing to young people, and gave them the courage to migrate themselves.
