Trunks of this sort were used by emigrants when they went abroad. If we open it up, we can see the kinds of things they took with them.
Looking around, we can see items like dictionaries in Japanese and local languages, as well as guidebooks and clothes. They also brought farming and carpentry tools for developing the land at their destination. For women, accessories and sewing tools were also essential.
Radios and such were luxury items at the time, so few people owned them. On the other hand, family photos and other items from home were important because they reminded immigrants of their connections to their country of origin.
