What do you think were the most common destinations for people emigrating from Japan?
Many emigrants left for the Americas. When slavery was abolished in the Americas in the 19th century, many people went there in search of new opportunities. Many hoped to farm on large plantations or develop untouched wilderness. Only a minority were tradespeople or professionals in fields such as fishing, industry, commerce, or law.
Although foreign migration to the Americas was halted during World War II, once it resumed, Japanese immigrants formed colonies in Central and South American countries such as Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. One of these was the Yguazú colony in Paraguay. You can use this interactive exhibit to learn more about this colony. The large screen also shows how the colonists developed the land and established their town.
