Japanese immigrants tried to preserve their native food culture by getting Japanese food whenever they could in their new homelands. This led some Japanese immigrants to establish businesses that produced foods such as miso, soy sauce, tofu, Japanese sweets, and sake. In areas with lots of Japanese, there were also general stores known as “yorozuya” that sold imported goods from Japan.
The exhibit here features a replica of a yorozuya operated by the Yasui Brothers in Hood River, Oregon, in the United States.
