Primary objectives and outcomes

This side event themed on "Synergies between climate action and sustainable development: contributing to a just transition". The discussion was based on the outcomes of the Think7 Summit in April 2023. Practical approaches to ensuring implemantation of climate change measures was discussed by government, UN agencies, donor, civil sector and think tank participants.

Content of the discussions

UNU-IAS Program Head Dr Akio Takemoto shared the outcomes of the Think7 Japan Summit, explaining that the main challenges are the growing vulnerability and disparities in the world caused by the rapid energy transition and social change.
In the panel discussion, panelists presented findings from Africa, Asia, and Europe, as well as the interconnections among the social factors and SDGs in various sectors. JICA introduced JICA's efforts to promote synergies between climate change and the SDGs to realize climate resilient development. JICA emphasized the need to look beyond the SDGs considering significance of climate change issues. Many panelists shared the importance of synergies between climate change and sustainable development goals. Panelists pointed out the importance of scientific research to provide evidence of synergies between climage change and sustainable development.
