Content of work

Through policy-oriented academic research, JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) intends to enhance the effectiveness of development cooperation in developing countries and contribute to formulation of the international development cooperation trend. Applicants to this post are expected to contribute to the promotion of JICA Ogata Research Institute research projects in collaboration with other researchers and practitioners.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct research activities with a focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and participate in the related on-going research project of JICA Ogata Research Institute as a research team member.

[Job discription]
(1) Implement the existing research project and its activities consisting of, among others, monitoring and revising the research plan and activities; exchanging opinions and coordinating with research collaborators, related personnel of project implementing department in JICA, and external experts; organizing research conferences/workshops; collecting information on international discussions about the related subjects; planning and undertaking surveys for data collection; analyzing data; producing knowledge products (research articles written in English or Japanese, policy notes, books, etc.) based on the research outputs including the results of testing research hypothesis,
(2) Based on the strategy of the research project, participate in and actively contribute to international collaborative research, analyses, and discussions on SDG progress monitoring, acceleration of SDG implementation, and improvement of the SDG indicator framework.
(3) Within the framework of the research project, develop and implement new research activities consisting of, among others, literature review, networking in search for research collaborators/co-authors, organizaing workshops, and developing research hypotheses.
(4) Communicate research results in, among others, seminars, academic conferences, international meetings, lectures in universities or training courses, publication of academic articles, reports and books.
(5) Undertake communication and coordination in conjunction with the activities (1) to (4) above.
There will be domestic and international business travels that are deemed necessary to conduct the above-mentioned activities.

The sccessful candidate is expected to contribute to existing or planned research activities, and also develop and implement new research activities in line with the strategy of the research project.

The period of contract

Full-time (fixed term)
Contracts are for each fiscal year. The contract can be renewed for up to three years if both parties agree.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:
(1) Having a doctoral degree in a field related to global environmental studies by the time of starting date of the contract.
(2) Experience in research on international development/cooperation with developing countries is desirable.
(3) Having experience in publishing academic papers and presenting at academic conferences in English, and having a high level of communication skills to carry out international research exchange and policy dialogues.
(4) Willing to work actively on the organizational research agenda of the JICA Ogata Research Institute and having a high level of motivation to carry out interdisciplinary research in collaboration with other researchers.
(5)-1 Native speaker of Japanese or possessing Japanese language skills of equivalent level is desirable.
(5)-2 Having a high level of English language proficiency. (a) TOEIC score of 860 or above, (b) TOEFL (PBT) score of 600 or above, (c) TOEFL (CBT) score of 250 or above, or (d) TOEFL (iBT) score of 100 or above)
(5)-3 Having experience in research using quantitative data analyses is desirable.

2. Experience in working or conducting research at development cooperation agencies, international organizations, or equivalent organazations is desirable.

3. While this position is open to all nationalities, applicants of foreign nationalities are required to have appropriate visa/permission to work in Japan.

Treatment

1. Working hours: 9:30 to 17:45 (45 minutes lunch break)
2. Holidays: Saturday, Sunday, and Japanese national holidays
3. Titles: Titles are assigned according to ability and experience in accordance with the relevant rules and regulations of the Institute. As a general guideline, lecturer, assistant professor, and post-doctoral-level researchers are given the title of "Research Fellow".
4. Compensation: Grade 4 (11-16 years of experience) Monthly basic salary 379,000 yen (no raise), allowances (overtime allowance, bonus (June and December), commuting allowance, designated city allowance)
5. Social insurance: Health insurance, employee pension, employee pension fund, unemployment insurance, and worker's accident compensation insurance will be provided.
