Signing Record of Discussions with Badan Keamanan Laut Republik Indonesia: the Project for Strengthening BAKAMLA's Capacity

Indonesia is an archipelagic nation, and the country's EEZ is the third largest in the world. Its waters are rich in fishery resources and reserves of seabed resources such as oil and natural gas. Accordingly, in addition to shipping, there are many economic activities related to fisheries and energy. On the other hand, the country's waters are frequently affected by illegal fishing, suspicious vessels, smuggling, terrorism, piracy, human trafficking, and natural disasters, etc. It has resulted in overfishing and loss of the country's sustainable fishery resources. Despite the fact that the Indonesian government is in the process of improving domestic systems and strengthening monitoring, existing patrol vessels and other vessels cannot adequately cover the vast sea area. Strengthening the capacity of BAKAMLA and increasing the number of patrol vessels and other assets are the urgent issue. Considering this background, it was decided to implement this technical cooperation project.

This project will establish a people development system for BAKAMLA, strengthen its capacity to conduct training, and enhance its inter-organizational coordination capabilities. Thereby, this project will develop knowledge and skills of the BAKAMLA’s staff to perform their functions, furthermore, it will contribute to improving BAKAMLA’s maritime law enforcement and case response capabilities.
