Climate resilience project: FMC-FFS seminar held in Addis Ababa
On May 30, 2025, the “Project for Strengthening Climate Resilience through Climate-Smart Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resource Management” organized a seminar on the Forest Management Cooperative – Farmers Field School (FMC-FFS) in Addis Ababa. The seminar shared the achievements of the FMC-FFS initiative and presented practical cases of sustainable forest management led by farmers. It also served as a platform for discussion on future scaling-up strategies.
The program included lectures on the concept and methodology of FMC-FFS, a promotional video screening, presentations by farmer facilitators, and a discussion session on future implementation strategies in collaboration with the Oromia Environment Protection Authority (OEPA), followed by a Q&A session.
On the day of the event, approximately 50 stakeholders involved in forest management participated, including development partners such as FAO, UNDP, GIZ, and the Norwegian Embassy, and Ethiopian government such as OEPA, the Oromia Regional Tourism Bureau, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Jimma and Ilubabor zones, and the Ministry of Agriculture.
The seminar attracted considerable interest from other donors, and there was lively discussion on specific implementation methods and the potential for regional expansion. Particularly, there was growing interest in approaches such as FESA (Forest Ecosystem Analysis), which enable farmers to actively understand the structure and changes in forests, and discussions on scaling up the FMC-FFS program also progressed.
JICA will continue to support the promotion of sustainable forest and natural resource management in Ethiopia through participatory learning and capacity-building initiatives involving forest users.
