Implementation of the 5S Introductory Training for Strengthening Nursing Management Capacity
January 27, 2026
The 5S Introductory Training, aimed at strengthening nursing management capacity and improving the quality of healthcare services, was conducted on October 27–28, 2025 in Dhaka, and January 10–11, 2026 in Mymensingh.
In Dhaka, 38 participants, including faculty members from the College of Nursing, Sher-E Bangla Nagar (CONSBN), and staff from Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital (ShSMCH), participated in the training. In Mymensingh, 40 participants from Mymensingh Nursing College (MNC) and Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) participated. The training was facilitated by staff of the Quality Improvement Secretariat (QIS), a division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) working to enhance the quality of health services, and focused on the basic principles of 5S as a practical approach to quality improvement in healthcare and nursing management.
ShSMCH has been implementing 5S activities systematically and, in recognition of its achievements, received the 5S Award from MOHFW in 2025. During the training, the nursing superintendent and Master Trainers of ShSMCH shared their experiences, good practices, and lessons learned, providing valuable peer-learning opportunities.
The program combined lectures with hands-on practice. As the first step in implementing 5S, participants spilt into small groups and carries out “Sort, Set in order, and Shine” activities in the hospital wards and nursing college settings. Participants also developed short-term action plans to promote continuous improvement in their respective institutions.
Learning outcomes were assessed through pre- and post-training multiple-choice tests (28 questions). Average scores increased from 21.1 to 24.2 in Dhaka and from 19.0 to 23.6 in Mymensingh, indicating a clear improvement in understanding. Overall satisfaction with the training was high, with average ratings of 4.6 out of 5 in Dhaka and 4.2 out of 5 in Mymensingh. Participants expressed strong motivation to apply 5S principles in their workplaces and daily lives, highlighting the relevance and practicality of the approach.
Although this training targeted a limited number of faculty members and staff from nursing colleges and medical college hospitals, it is expected that participants will act as change agents and apply 5S principles to improve day-to-day nursing management in their respective institutions. The effective use of 5S to enhance the quality of healthcare services and nursing education requires institutional commitment and long-term, organization-wide efforts, rather than individual efforts alone. Continued expansion and integration of 5S practices are therefore expected to contribute to sustainable improvements in healthcare services and nursing education quality.
