2024年3月、供与機材引渡式および合同調整委員会会合を開催しました（See below for the English version.）

本プロジェクトでは、日本側研究機関からの専門家の派遣、南アフリカ側からの研修員の受入、機材供与によりプロジェクト活動を推進し、研究指導と人材育成を行っています。

今般、カーボンリサイクルを目的とした炭酸塩鉱物化（MCC）のためのパイロットプラントおよび分析機材の合計10点を供与するにあたり、2024年3月13日に、両国関係者を招いて供与機材引渡式が開催されました。

南アフリカ側は、機材の免税・通関手続のほか、機材の据付と稼働のための改修工事を行うなど機材の受入体制を整え、日本側は、専門家による指導および立ち合いの下で設置・組立て、試運転等に協力しました。今後、これら機材の活用により南アフリカ初となる、二酸化炭素から炭酸カルシウムを製造する技術の確立に向けてプロジェクト活動の加速化が期待されます。

なお、供与機材引渡式に先立ち、同日に第2回合同調整委員会会合（JCC：Joint Coordination Committee)が開催されました。JCCでは、プロジェクトの意思決定の場として、プロジェクト中核メンバーである研究機関やJICAのほか、在南アフリカ日本大使館、科学技術振興機構（JST）および南アフリカ科学イノベーション省が参加し、プロジェクトの進捗を確認し、今後の計画を議論し、承認しました。

プロジェクト開始から3年目を迎え、関係者の相互理解が一層深まり、プロジェクト活動のスムーズな実施や合意形成に繋がっています。プロジェクトの研究成果を南アフリカの温室効果ガス排出量削減につなげるとの目標に向けて、引き続き、研究者間の往来を重ね、民間企業等の多様なアクターも巻き込みながら活動を推進していきます。

March 2024, the project held the equipment handing over ceremony and the Joint Coordination Committee

The SATREPS project promotes research activities and capacity development for young researchers through key measures, including the exchange of researchers, training programmes in Japan, and the provision of specialised equipment.

In this regard, analytical equipment and a pilot plant for Mineral Carbon Capture and Utilisation (MCC&U) have been transported and provided by Japan to the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The handover ceremony for the equipment was held on 13 March 2024. Stakeholders from Japan and South Africa were invited as well as the researchers from both countries.

To receive the equipment, the South Africa side made various preparations such as renovation of the laboratory, custom clearance, tax exemptions and so forth. The Japanese side travelled to South Africa to install the equipment and assemble the pilot plant for the smooth operation and will assist with future maintenance as needed.

Prior to the ceremony, the second Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) was held. JCC acts as a decision making body with members from the research institutions, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency), Embassy of Japan in South Africa and DSI (Department of Science and Innovation). During the meeting, project progress was confirmed with active discussion and advice offered, and the plan of operation was approved.

In 2024, after two JCC and regular updates on day-to-day research activities and discussion, mutual understanding has been deepened, facilitating smooth project operation and effective decision making.

We continue our research utilising the equipment, along with exchange of researchers, and through collaboration with industrial partners and other stakeholders.

Towards the end of the project, we will make the utmost effort to reduce Green House Gas emissions and establish a circular economy model for the cement industry. We are committed to achieve the project purpose which reads: “Carbon recycling systems including resource recycling loops is developed to reduce process-related CO2 emissions from the cement industry”.
