Public Awareness Activity at the Online Safety Forum 2024

On July 30, 2024, the Online Safety Forum 2024 was co-hosted by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC) and a private telecommunications company. In order to enhance online safety in Cambodia's increasingly digital society, a wide range of stakeholders, including government agencies, development partners, private companies, educational institutions, and NGOs, were invited to discuss online risks.

In the first half of the event, the JICA expert made a presentation on “The Impacts of Emerging Technology on Online Safety” as a part of the project's public awareness activities, explaining the effects of new digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the threats, harms, and countermeasures online. He also introduced JICA's cybersecurity enhancement efforts in Cambodia. Furthermore, in a panel discussion based on this topic, representatives from government agencies and development partners introduced national and regional trends of online risks and discussed future countermeasures, based on the latest case studies and survey results.

In addition, the event featured more discussion on issues such as cybersecurity, online privacy, and safe Internet use by children.

While the use of digital payments is rapidly increasing in Cambodia, cybercrime and online scam are becoming serious issues. In addition, ensuring children's online safety is also an urgent issue as online connectivity permeates our lives. The event reminded us that it is even more important for MPTC and related organizations to work together to strengthen cybersecurity and promote public awareness in order to enhance online safety.
